Questions Asked Of and
Answered By Dave
These are real questions from
real users and the answers they got back from me.
Some of the question may be edited if I don't think it relates to the
question.
"I'm thinking about
getting a Toshiba e740 or Tungsten T3 and I wanted to know if I
get one or the other can I switch the operating system on them
i.e. Palm Os to Pocket PC or Vice versa."
Nope. Can't switch OS's. They
are built specifically for the device. Think of it like
Windows and Mac.
"I was looking at the Dell Axim X30
either 312 or 624 MHz. Is the size of processor going to be evident when
trying to access the internet or using it for other programs?"
The size of the processor you should buy
just depends on how you will use it. A 312 will be fine for most users,
though if you are going to be doing a lot on it an running more
"advanced" applications, you will want the 624. For instance, I
like to play games, run a number of applications at once, and want the
extra power behind my device. My girlfriend just uses her device
as an address book and calendar, so she doesn't need the extra power.
"With the Bluetooth is the PDA going to
be ready to connect to the internet when I receive it or will I have to
buy anything else? Does the Bluetooth go in the memory slot that is used
for SD expansion memory?"
The Bluetooth will be ready to
connect to other Bluetooth devices, but usually you wouldn't use it for
internet surfing. The WiFi will be able to connect you to the internet
through WiFi access points. If the device includes Bluetooth, it will be
embedded in the device and your SD slot will be available.
"I
have read numerous reviews on the retractable sync/power cables but none
of them tell me if, when using the cable, I can download files (Word,
Excel etc) from my PDA to a desktop or laptop that may not have
ActivSync installed. (i.e. just a file
transfer capability)."
Actually it isn't the cable that restricts thinks like file
downloads, that is the software. ActiveSync for Pocket PC or HotSync for
Palms will allow you to download virtually any document. The reviews of
the sync cables are usually just about form factor and "cool features."
The desktop application (i.e. ActiveSync or HotSync) is what actually
allows you to chose files and send them. Note that you do not have
a use a sync cable to get files to your device. The other option
is to use an expansion card.
"If you have the Graffiti pad instead of
virtual graffiti does that mean the only place that you can write on the
screen is in the pad?"
Yes. Usually if a device says it has a Graffiti pad,
the only included input method is via the graffiti pad. Devices
with Virtual Graffiti have a virtual pad that can be turned on and off,
so when you don't need the input panel, you have extra screen space for
other things.
