Microsoft Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition
    
Released September 2001, Pocket PC 2002 is based on Windows CE 3.0.  Pocket PC 2002 provides few new features over its predecessor Pocket PC.  PPC2002 only support ARM based processors like the Intel StrongARM and XScale chips.  PPC2002 has a more "Windows XP" style interface and provides a revised Pocket PC core for better system stability.
     In 2002 Microsoft introduced Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition, a revised version of Pocket PC for built specifically for Pocket PC devices that also include cell phone functionality.  PPC PE is not an upgrade to Pocket PC 2002 but is for a different style product.
     Note, some devices listed use the slightly older Pocket PC platform.

PalmSource Palm OS
    
Palm OS 5.0 is the newest version of the Palm operating system developed by PalmSource.  Version 5 utilizes the ARM processor architecture  while still supporting applications developed for previous version of the Palm OS.  Version 5 turns Palm OS devices into more powerful mobile computers then ever before.  Devices with a non-version 5 Palm OS cannot be upgraded to Palm OS version 5.
     Palm OS 4.1 is still found on many Palm OS based devices.  Version 4.1 provides new features over previous versions including better support for color devices as well as expansion options.  The Palm OS is more of an organizer style operating system, though it also is adding support for robust multimedia applications.
     Note, some devices listed use the slightly older Palm OS platform.
