Samsung PDA/Phone From Sprint

Sprint PCS will begin offering the Samsung SPH-i300 PDA/Phone combination device on their CMDA wireless network. The SPH-i300 is a color Palm OS 3.5 device with 16mb of RAM, 256 color screen, and gpsOne support. The device retails for $500 and is available now from Sprint.

Cheap Memory, Retail Wins

CompUSA's advertisement this weekend has some great memory prices in it, and some are even better then online! 128mb of CF, SD and Smart Media are all just $40 after rebate, and Memory Sticks are only $50. Update:While you are there stop and take a look at the Pocket PC's on display. On the weekends, most stores have special Pocket PC sales person who are very knowledgable and ready to answer any PPC questions you have.

The Next Phone Edition

Currently in the US T-Mobile and AT&T both carry similar Phone Edition devices leaving many users to wonder, what is next. HTC recently received FCC approval for a CDMA based (as opposed to GSM like the T-Mobile) Phone Edition devices. Specifications are still blurry, though the device also includes a GPS location unit and likely has more RAM and a better processor then current Phone Editions.

Replacement iPAQ 5450 Batteries

HP has posted information on slim and extended batteries they plan to sell for the iPAQ 5450. The slim battery will be available at the end of the month for $80 and the extended battery will be available in January for $130. With the extended battery you gain almost twice the battery life but cannot use iPAQ expansion packs.

NEC To Try PPC In US

"According to sources, First International Computer (FIC) has landed orders from NEC to manufacture 50,000 Pocket PCs. The model, an extended version of NEC�s MobilePro 300E, will feature an Intel XScale processor, sources said. The devices will be available in March, with sales focused on the US market."

Thanks Michael M. who inadvertently told me about a great sale Best Buy has on the D-Link 802.11b Compact Flash card. It has a $40 rebate on it right now bringing the price from $80 down to $40. I think I might even go pick one up.

Spb Software Customer Rewards

Even though Spb Software produces some of the best software titles, they still want to give users even more benefits to purchasing their products. "Whenever a customer purchases software from Spb, they'll get one-third of their purchase back in the form of points. These points can then be redeemed for software products. Sendo Sues Microsoft

After the initial release of SmartPhone, Sendo announced they would no longer be selling a phone running Microsoft's SmartPhone 2002 OS. Now the reasons for this are becoming clearer. "British mobile phone maker Sendo said on Monday it had filed suit in U.S. federal court against its former partner Microsoft in a dispute over intellectual property." Sendo now has a new deal with Symbian and Nokia, Microsoft's SmartPhone competitors.

Wireless and Memory, Under $60

Both 802.11b wireless network CF cards and SD 128mb memory cards are available and ready to ship for under $60. Dell Axim users can use both in Axim, while many other new PDA's support SD and can use the added memory card from programs and data.

Interested in some of the top of the line PDA's? The new Palm Tungsten T running Palm OS 5 is already below retail at a price of just over $400. If you like the Pocket PC's better and would prefer something with 802.11b built in, the iPAQ 5450 is now available for slightly below its $700 retail price. For a more inexpensive Pocket PC, the ultra-small iPAQ 1910 is available for $300.

T-Mobile Phone Edition Update

An update for T-Mobile Phone Editions is now available. The update includes: upgraded radio, device freezes fixes, fix for incorrect display of the operator name, missed call incidence is significantly reduced, WMP 8.5, and more. It is recommended that T-Mobile PPC Phone Edition users update their device.

Tungsten T and NX70V Performance

Benchmark fans, take a look at this. CLIE Source recently did a comparison of the Palm Tungsten T and Sony CLIE NX70V's benchmarks. This is an incredible (technically speaking) look at the performance of TI's OMAP1510 vs. Intel's XScale on Palm OS 5 based devices and even compares some specs to that of a Palm Vx.

Kyocera 7135 Palm OS Phone

Kyocera has released their new 7135 flip-phone that is not only a phone but also a Palm OS based PDA. The 7135 splits the grafiti pad away from the screen to allow the phone to fold. It includes Palm OS 4.1, 16mb of RAM, SD slot, GPS locater, 1200mAh batter, and runs on CDMA wireless networks. The 7135 is priced at $500.

New Cases Coming From Proporta

Proporta has three more of their new aluminum cases coming out soon and a sweet deal if you preorder them now. The new cases are for the Sony NX70V, Palm Tungsten T, and the XDA/T-Mobile. Seidio Dual CF Sleeve Review

MobiGeeks recently took a look at Seidio's SeidioPak, a Dual CF and Power Pack for the iPAQ. The expansion sleeve has two type II CF slots and uses a detachable and recharagable Nokia 8290 Lithium battery for added power. The SeidioPack is available now and is priced at just over $100 (with USB sync and charge cable).

Hitachi/Sprint Pocket PC

New Pocket PC Thoughts contributor Janak received an exclusive picture of a possible new Hitachi product that could be coming out on the Sprint wireless network. The device appears to be a Pocket PC and includes a camera, thumb keyboard and wireless 1xRTT networking.

Intel GPRS PC Card Coming

A visitor informed us of a new PC Card that could be coming soon from Intel. "The Intel PRO/Wireless GPRS 3110 PC Card provides mobile users with all-the-time, everywhere access to information at speeds up to that of traditional analog modems-without wires or the inconvenience of dial-up modem connections." The FCC document does not list Pocket PC compatibililty nor does it list a release data for the product.

New Memory Sticks Coming

"Sony is close to unveiling a new, higher-capacity version of its popular Memory Stick removable flash memory card. But sources say it won't be compatible with some older devices. Expected to be announced at next month's Consumer Electronics Show, the new Memory Stick uses a different architecture to achieve higher capacities than the original card, sources said. Current Memory Stick cards top out at 128MB, but the new cards will come in 256MB, 512MB and 1GB capacities."

HP Jornada 56x EUU 3

Compal Smartphone Gets FCC O.K.

A Smartphone under development by Compal has been approved for US used by the FCC. The device is made to run on the US GSM 1900 network and includes internation GSM/GPRS support. AT&T, Cingular, and T-Mobile are all evaluating US deployment of the SmartPhone.

NX70 Wi-Fi Card "Bug" Fix

PDABuzz is reporting a fix to the fatal errors users have been experiencing with the NX70 and the Sony Wi-Fi card. "In the Network Preferences, choose the Wireless LAN service and tap Details, then Edit. Tap Advanced Setup, and disable PowerSaveMode by removing the checkmark. If you've had problems with the Sony Wi-Fi card, then performing this tweak may get you up and running just as it has done for us."

ViewSonic V35 Missing Memory

"Viewsonic tells us that it will revise its marketing literature after users discovered that its new budget PocketPC has less memory than advertised....In fact, users have discovered it only has 38 MB RAM, as [an] irate thread at PocketPC Thoughts community forum explains." ViewSonic's included software seems to be perminatly stored causing this decrease in internal memory from 64mb to only 38mb.

Pocket Solutions CoverUp

A while back we reported about the Pocket Solutions CoverUP, a foam lined aluminum cover. Pocket Solutions is now shipping CoverUp's for seven different PDA's and soon for the Tungsten. The CoverUp attaches to the back of your device and includes a higed top, adding a cover similar to that of the older Palms and HP Jornada. The covers are $20 from Pocket Solutions and are shipping now.

Though this site is suppose to be all PDA's, sometimes things like Handhelds and SmartPhones sneak in. I have recently updated (added) a section for SmartPhone 2002 based devices and removed the very old Tablet PC rumors. Since SmartPhone is a sister product of Pocket PC, I think having some information on these hot little phones will be beneficial to you.

Brighthand recently took a look at the AlphaSmart Dana, a rugged word processor that runs the Palm OS. The Dana isn't a PDA but a handheld/laptop style product that features the benefits of the Palm OS and a price tag consistent with a word processor. The Dana is limited compared to a laptop, but is a simple solution for schools in need of word-processing power for students.

New Samsung Device Has It All...Even TV

Samsung Electronics has taken the wraps off a prototype Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition. Though the device isn't slated for a US release, the specifications are impressive (to say the least). The SPH-M400 contains an XScale processor, CMDA wireless, 16-bit color display, TV tuner, GPS unit, infrared port, and SDIO slot in a 0.7" thick device. The device will be available in South Korea next year with no word on if the device might make an appearance in North America.

Ultra Thin Stowaway For Palm

Think Outside has a new portable keyboard for Palm OS devices like the new Tungsten. The keyboard only has one fold unlike other Stowaway keyboards, but it ultra thin, ultra small, and ultra portable. Palm Info Center took a hands-on look at this product with the new Palm Tungsten T.
